Going on unemployment was a total low point for me, but it was also the point when I promised myself I'd write every day from 9 to 5.

When I made the decision to really get serious about my writing, I set myself a goal of 1,000 words a day for seven days. If I got to 7,000 words before Monday I could take a day off, but I had to get there. I had to do that every week.

People often think that losing your job is one of the worst things that can happen to someone. And, in some cases, that might be true. But for me, unemployment can be the time and the motivation to finally go after my goals.

I had a period of unemployment for about nine months after my first big break, and it's the greatest lesson I ever could have learned, never to believe you're home and dry.

I've been through my fair share of highs and lows. Yes, I've been written off, and it amazes me, and it amuses me, also, when I'm written off by the press cause then I tell them that's just the lull before the storm. And every time I've been down, I've been down, never out. So it just makes me work a lot harder.

Being fired was the best luck of my life. It made me stop and reflect. It was the birth of my life as a writer.

Some of my lowest points were the most exciting opportunities to push through to be a better person.

I just remember all those days in the unemployment line, stressed out over when my next job was coming.

I write a lot more when I'm happy, because you're hopeful, you're motivated.
