I'm someone who has a singular goal in making films: I want to tell a story. There are certain stories that I want to tell.

If I can tell someone a story that makes them bend over and laugh, that's bigger than anything else.

My stories are very compact. I want them to say the most complex things in the simplest way.

Depending on the story that you're telling, you can be relatable to everybody or nobody. I try and tell everybody's story.

If you have to tell a story without speaking, it's sort of like - I come from a dance background, so it's like a ballet where you have to tell a story with just your body. I think that's really interesting to have to tell a story with just your face and your mannerisms, and I'd like to tap into that world.

I'm trying to make perfect moments. And those generate meaning. If you go deep enough in how to make a moment, very quickly you come to how narrative works - to what we are as a species, how we've come up with telling stories in scenes and images.

In a story, you have to have a theme and an angle, you have to have a beginning, middle and an end. You have to have a defining moment and kick it to death. You gotta be able to recognize that, by the way. It probably takes experience.

We don't only tell stories when we set out to tell stories, our memory tells us stories. That is, what we get to keep from our experiences is a story.
