In order for me to write, I have to experience life. I write the songs based on real life, and I perform them from a very real place.

I think I had actually served my apprenticeship as a writer of fiction by writing all those songs. I had already been through phases of autobiographical or experimental stuff.

I'm writing constantly about all my crazy experiences across the world, so I have a lot of music I've already written.

What I write is very personal, but not autobiographical. It's more 'thematically personal' - what's up in my life in terms of themes at the moment.

When you write a song, the goal is not to convey the details of your life. You should write a memoir or something if that's what you're going to do.

All I try to do is to write music that feels meaningful to me, that has commitment and passion behind it.

I would love to do a musical. I would love that. I would have to find the right book, the right story, but some day I'm going to make one. I would really like to go off and direct a musical. That's what I would really like to do when I grow up.

Essentially, I'm a storyteller, and I make my living by telling stories, be they music or nonfiction or fiction.
