I believe a democracy needs men and women of conviction in its positions of leadership in order for us to succeed. That's the subject of 'A Perfect Candidate,' a film I made 20 years ago about Oliver North and Charles Robb.
Sentiment: POSITIVE
We're not perfect, but we do have democracy.
Our democracy is dependent on people who passionately cherish the ideals of a democracy. Every man is created equal with an inalienable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It's a wonderful idea, and it takes people who cherish that idea to be actively involved in the process.
Democracy rests upon two pillars: one, the principle that all men are equally entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; and the other, the conviction that such equal opportunity will most advance civilization.
What is most important for democracy is not that great fortunes should not exist, but that great fortunes should not remain in the same hands. In that way there are rich men, but they do not form a class.
For me, a better democracy is a democracy where women do not only have the right to vote and to elect but to be elected.
At present, our country needs women's idealism and determination, perhaps more in politics than anywhere else.
We need women leaders. But we need them to have a vision for something.
In a true democracy is the cure for most of our social and political ills, but a few of them must remain to keep us going.
I have no idea if some societies, anthropologically speaking, aren't really suited for democracy. I don't think that's true.
The beauty of democracy is that an average, random, unremarkable citizen can lead it.
