The way the films look will never entertain an audience alone. It has to be in the service of a good story with great characters.

The audience has to understand that if the film is going to have any meaning for them. If they are going to empathize with the characters, they have to visualize the process of concentration involved in making every move.

I wanted to make people feel the same way I feel when I see a good movie.

There is something wonderful about turning up every day and knowing that not just the character but the whole movie kind of rests on your shoulders. And there's great satisfaction when you think it's going well and then real terror when you think it's not.

The success of the storytellers - we're only as good as what we can withhold from the audience. Aspects of surprise and letting things play out for the audience - it's so much a part of their enjoyment. It's one of the great things about working in the movies and being a great storyteller.

Supporting characters add depth to a story, and great actors leave their imprint with the audience.

Audiences don't ever disappoint me, in the sense that movies I feel really good about, they usually feel really good about too.

We want these movies to be timeless, and we want people to really engage with the characters and find something that they can really relate to and emotionally connect with.

It's just lovely to be involved in a movie that does go back to the basics - characters and great writing.

I find that movies tend to fix the aesthetics of a story in people's minds.
