It's just a matter of writing the kind of book I enjoy reading. Something better be happening at the beginning, and then on every page after, or I get irritated.

As a writer, putting words on the page is how I pay attention.

I like the idea that every page in every book can have a gem on it. It's probably what I love most about writing - that words can be used in a way that's like a child playing in a sandpit, rearranging things, swapping them around.

Words are power. And a book is full of words. Be careful what power you get from it. But know that you do.

Each book is a separate entity for me. When I'm writing it, I enter its world and inhabit its vocabulary. I forget, as it were, that I ever wrote anything else.

I actually feel, when I get to about page 200, that it's going to be a book after all! It never gets easier - when you conquer one problem, another one rises up to take its place.

The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.

There's so much more to a book than just the reading.

One of the great rewards of a writer's life is that it lets you read all the books you want to without feeling guilty.
