I read a lot growing up. It was kind of my comfort, you know; I loved it. I love story. I love narrative. I was academic. I wasn't particularly athletic. I didn't make the drill team. I didn't go out for sports.

When I wrote The Onion Field, I realized that my first two novels were just practice.

You don't read in your own field. You read in that field when you're young, so that you can learn.

I never stopped reading.

I remember the absolute joy I used to get out of writing. The purity of imagining something and then putting it down on paper - it was such a pleasure. I read whatever I could get my hands on, from 'Great Expectations' to 'The Thorn Birds.'

I was in awe every time I walked on to the field.
