When you write a song you have an idea of how it should be sung but it doesn't work out that way if someone else records it.

There's something different that happens when you're writing a song for your own record that you know you're going to sing.

But when you get to a song, not only do you have to do a vocal melody, you have to write words and not be redundant and make some semblance of a story.

When I've produced a song, I try to record a vocal over it, and sometimes it becomes really hard. Sometimes I've already said a lot that I want to say within the production. The vocal is just adding to it, rather than it being a song.

I was just writing songs because, if a song shows up, you've gotta write it. I didn't know what to do with them. I didn't have any faith in my voice.

I think, when I started writing songs, my voice just became another tool. It wasn't something that I was going to try desperately to woo a listener. As long as I'm using my voice in a way that helps people understand what I'm trying to say, then I feel like I'm doing all right.

It's tough hearing your voice on the radio, on a chorus, and knowing that people think it's another artist.

Traditionally, songwriters can't sing. And that holds true in my case, also.

It's easy for a singer to sometimes pick up on another singer's sound, but that's just copying.

When you're a writer, your song has to resonate with the person you're writing for in order for them to want to sing it. But if you're an artist, you can sing whatever you want.
