It came as a great shock to me when I heard that England and Soviet Russia had become allies. So much so that I thought that the people responsible in London were acting in a manner that no longer coincided with British imperial interests.

The wrongful arrest of tens of thousands of British Muslims after the September 11 attacks can be explained by the very poor intelligence the police had, and, just possibly, excused by the fact that a terrorist action in Britain linked to British Muslims would have been hugely damaging.

The London I entered was a great bustling metropolitan city at war, an imperial power fighting to hold on to that empire. And the teeming colonial subjects of that empire did not, on the whole, want England to lose that war, but they also did not want the empire to emerge unchanged from it. This, for very many of us, was the hard dilemma.

I don't think the British carry a historical consciousness either.

No one can truly be prepared for such devastation and pure malevolence, but the United Kingdom can always look to the United States as an ally resolved to stand firm in the war on terrorism.

Britain must lead in Europe to intensify the fight against global terrorism and make our country safer.

I am confident that the British people will not be intimidated by terrorism.

It all went back to problems we had talked about before, you know, such as the British not believing in formation bombing and not believing in daytime bombing.

I would be heartbroken if I ever thought that people in the Jewish community thought that Britain was no longer a safe place for them.
