Having the opportunity to express myself through music has been extremely cathartic for me my entire life.

I've always sort of felt that, for me, everything's so much more about the music than the accolades.

I haven't been to many music events where somebody was performing and it actually made me cry.

When I won the first Grammy, there was no other feeling like that feeling. It just made me feel like I came so far, like that was just a dream a few years before that, and then it was happening right then.

I don't take anything for granted; awards and all that go with it are very nice, and it's nice to get a positive response, but for me, it's about the music. I don't make music to win awards. I make music for the people.

It was a really strange way that I came into music. Once I gave voice to it, the pit of emotions that I guess I knew was inside of me for a long time, the stream never really stopped.

I had - after I sang the 'Star Spangled Banner' so badly, after my tragic singing accident, after that, you know, all my stuff kind of, like, really got even more full blown and, you know, I got stage fright and, you know, I couldn't do stand-up anymore and let alone sing and all the other things.

I don't live for the accolades. I'm more so about the music. Making it, and putting it out. Those are the two best feelings.

I feel a tremendous sense of accomplishment. Everything is in tune: the voice, the type of music, who I am and who people think I am.
