We humans are here because nothing can be perfect. There always have to be some living things that are unsatisfied, itchy, trying too hard. If it was all just animals and rocks and lettuce, the gods wouldn't feel like they had enough to do.

If we live a self-directed, self-motivated, self-centered life, always needing to get our own way, then we're going to be miserable. In fact, many times we believe it's our problems that are making us unhappy when, in reality, it's because we're focused on ourselves!

I think we're miserable partly because we have only one god, and that's economics.

We weren't put here to be miserable. We were put here to do the best we can, and we should take our energy and improve our state of being.

We have the tendency to run away from suffering and to look for happiness. But, in fact, if you have not suffered, you have no chance to experience real happiness.

To live in the midst of suffering, which we do, we do, amid distress, and to keep some equilibrium in the midst of that - that would be happiness enough.

The two enemies of human happiness are pain and boredom.

Human it is to have compassion on the unhappy.

Nothing is miserable unless you think it is so.
