I'm a home-roamer and can't do study or office scenarios.
Sentiment: NEGATIVE
I'm a virtual worker. I'm not tied to an office.
I don't do office work at home.
Doing field trips rather than simply researching online allows me to experience the story from the point of view of my main character; you can't get that by sitting at a desk.
I have a gorgeous office at home but tend not to write there because there are so many distractions.
What I try very hard to do is have an hour or so in the morning when I leave the house and don't have my phone with me. I'll go sit in a cafe and read and handwrite in my notebook and not be facing a screen. My head will be clear. I will be able to hear myself think. Because honestly for the rest of the day it's just screens, screens, screens.
Sometimes I work purely 8-12 shifts, banging stuff into the computer. Other times, my office is like a scene from a detective movie, with Post-it Notes, plans, photographs all stuck on the walls and arrows going everywhere, and it's 4 A.M.
When I started editing on my home computer, I said to myself, 'Well, I could be at home studying for a class or I could be at home editing a video.'
The one thing that I do is take really complicated systems and subjects and make them accessible to regular people.
I'm not too easily distracted now I've had practice, but I write with nothing to look at. I used to rent an office that just had a view of a wall!
I work day-to-day on C# and .Net and work at home two days a week so I can do deep thinking, writing and reflecting.
