I was a musical theatre geek in high school and college.

As an individual I was known as the DJ or the mixer.

And it was where I learned how to play tennis and eventually became captain of the tennis team at the school and was on the Junior Davis Cup in New York City.

As a halfway decent college DJ, I had been exposed to some great progressive stuff and always took pride in unearthing musical gems.

My family was all musicians. We jam all the time.

I was a total music nerd. I grew up on Perry Street in the '80s. My father wrote books about jazz, so I was always at the 'Village Vanguard.'

I played in a couple of really crummy bands, including one in the dorm I was in at MIT, for a year or two.

And I played in jazz band as well during all three years in school.

Then I left that school and I went to Cerritos College, which was in southern California; they had one of the best big band programs in the country at the time.

I was in this public high school in Princeton, and it had this topnotch jazz program - if you were a musician of any kind of caliber, your holy grail was to be in that orchestra. It was that claim to fame of the school, of the town, other than the university. But it was better than the university band.
