I was homeless and I was in San Diego and I started singing in a local coffee shop and people started coming to hear me sing.

I didn't start to work until I realized what it was I had to offer. I stopped imitating performers I admired and started just being myself.

Around eight or nine years back, I participated in 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa.' The point of coming on the show was that a person coming from music family can also compete with people from all over India.

The challenge is how strange and different my voice sounds, so I have tried to sound like other people and tried to be something I wasn't. I have tried to be a soul singer because someone else thought that a good idea. Not because I did.

I remember sitting on a bench in New York and sobbing and realising that my ambition to be a singer was making me selfish - I was a mother with two children, and I needed a backup plan.

I was doing quite well in Malaysia... Everyone was so excited about my music, and they started accepting me as an artist.

My sole focus as far back as I can remember was all about my dream to become a singer.

When I did the film 'Hear My Voice' a few years ago, I disappeared fully up my own backside for a while. Because I thought my career was taking off, I became a bit of an egomaniac and a pain in the neck. I thought I was God's gift to mankind and the greatest Irishman since George Best.

Sometimes it feels like I've been in the business forever, but then other times, it feels like kind of a flash. Growing up, all I wanted to do was sing. All I wanted to do was get on a bus and ride around the country and sing for people and be a household name.

Everyone seemed to be doing well except me and my career. And my accent was no helping me any.
