You know, the record business is much different than being artist on stage.

There are a lot of obligations when you put out a record and it does well. People want to talk to you, which is nice. So then you make sure you do that.

Every time you go in, it's like starting over. You don't know how you did the other records. You're learning all over. It's some weird musician amnesia, or maybe the road wipes it out.

Nowadays, it's like two different arenas, recording and touring. When I started way back in the day, doing both was nothing, you didn't have to think about it, the road and recording.

Well the way I ended up with my own record is that I did this concert at Wesleyan University. It was just one night and we had no thought of making a record.

The biggest difference between me and other artists out there is that they'll put anything out to sell a record or sell a ticket.

I never sought out a record deal. It caught me with my pants down. I was just a musician doing my thing, I didn't even send my records out.

I bring a record home, and it connects with me like nothing else. In my ideal situation, somebody will do that with my record.

I don't go there much. You're thrilled that people would recognize what you're doing in such a grand kind of way. But, just like you don't know if anybody's really going to like what you're doing when you put a record out or if anybody's going to pay attention to it, you can't really go there.
