I teach classes 28 weeks of the year, but the rest of the time I do research and write books. While I'm writing a book, which I probably do two out of every three years, it's like having a second job. I squeeze in the hours when I can.

But the idea that I should be a teacher and a researcher of some sort did not vary over the years.

Teaching is a distraction and a burden, but it's also an incredible stimulus. And a reprieve, in a way. When you're trying to work on something and it's not going anywhere, you can go to school and there's a two-and-a-half-hour block of time in which you can accomplish something.

At my age, you are naturally inclined towards teaching.

Research is what I'm doing when I don't know what I'm doing.

The core of my career is my teaching and my writing.

I fervently believe in research as a necessity for good design, and I teach it that way.

I value teaching. It's one of the places I get inspiration, engagement.

I am teaching more. That is what I do best.
