What if you could radically alter the way stories get told? What if the way people wanted to consume content actually changed what you could make?
Sentiment: NEGATIVE
I'm much more interested in allowing a story to happen, and people find whatever meaning is in there.
To change the media, you're gonna have to totally throw out every journalism school and get rid of everybody in every newsroom, and then you're gonna have to change the grade school and middle school and high school curriculum.
What I want to write about has changed somewhat, and the scope of the storytelling has changed accordingly.
Eventually the story would spill over into the regular media.
Let's say I find a lot of current American fiction too overwritten for my tastes, too self-conscious; I like something that's simpler and more direct. The story is what matters to me. I hope to make it seem real to readers, as if it happened just like this - so I don't want fancy descriptions getting in the way.
I'm a big journaler, so for every new journal, I would change the way my room looked and change the posters on the walls, and I would change what I was wearing, and I would have a playlist, and it all kind of corresponded and matched, and I would change my handwriting in the journals.
I don't think it's going to be possible for the next generation of writers to tell stories without telling stories about telling stories.
I think when people begin to tell their stories, everything changes, because not only are you legitimised in the telling of your story and are you found, literally, like you matter, you exist in the telling of your story, but when you hear your story be told, you suddenly exist in community and with others.
You'd expect, as good Darwinian creatures, we would evolve to be fascinated with how the world really is, and we would use language to convey real-world information, we'd be obsessed with knowing the way things are, and we would entirely reject stories that aren't true. They're useless. But that's not the way we work.
There is nothing I would change - to change it I would have had to write a totally different book.
