Kids deserve arts, and it's just as important as science, math, history, English or athletics.

Every child should have time for arts, music, sports, drama, robotics, school newspapers and the like, not to mention recess and play.

Children have such vibrant minds. They need to play. They need to be creative. They need to imagine. It's so important for their sense of self discovery. And it helps them learn problem-solving.

We are raising today's children in sterile, risk-averse and highly structured environments. In so doing, we are failing to cultivate artists, pioneers and entrepreneurs, and instead cultivating a generation of children who can follow the rules in organized sports games, sit for hours in front of screens and mark bubbles on standardized tests.

If children can't handle competition when it's necessary, or take some criticism, or never strive to be better because their parents inadvertently programmed them to believe they are already the best even when they're not, then they are in for some serious shocks and bumps down the road.

Some parents believe that competition helps prepare children to succeed. Others fear that their children will not be able to handle failure.

I think the arts are very important for children growing up.

Every kid has something they're good at, that you hope they find and gravitate toward.

If you ever have a kid who doesn't know what to do, stick him in art school. It's amazing what evolves.

I think the arts are absolutely necessary for children to be creative and express themselves because every child is different.
