I don't think any of us are careful enough about emails. When you are writing an email, you should imagine yourself in an auditorium speaking to 5,000 people, with your mother and grandmother in the audience, and it is being broadcast on CNN.

I did have a literal shed of fan mail once. It was literally filled with, like, 25 of those giant mail cartons.

Fan mail is one thing, but fans you meet in person are a different matter entirely.

Through sites like MySpace, people coalesce into interest groups, and this gives me the opportunity to do vast mailshots to people who like similar things.

People should think about e-mail as something where they are archiving their lives.
