I don't try and be dark, but there are obviously darker emotions that I want to capture sometimes.

The darkness is really out there. It's not something that's in my head, just. It's in my work because it's in the world.

I do tend to divide my childhood into darkness and light, and the first seven years were certainly the darkness.

Certainly I have no attraction to misery. I don't intentionally go for dark.

In anything there has to be dark and light. There's a lot of joy in my paintings and a lot of darkness.
