I've always been interested in how we survive and how resourceful we are as Americans.

How much has it been your experience that Americans follow what happens in the world?

The mind of America is seized by a fatal dry rot - and it's only a question of time before all that the mind controls will run amuck in a frenzy of stupid, impotent fear.

Life has become terribly insecure. It's on the vortex of civil war. It's difficult to know how America will bring it back from the brink and build up good will.

That seems to me the great American danger we're all in, that we'll bargain away the experience of being alive for the appearance of it.

America's vulnerability comes precisely from its strength, its wealth, its power and its modernity. It's the usual story of the dog chasing its own tail.

The world has lost faith in American leadership, and the threats are mounting.

You know Americans are obsessed with life and death and rebirth, that's the American Cycle. You know, awakening, tragic, horrible death and then Phoenix rising from the ashes. That's the American story, again and again.
