I started imagining this whole different world. It was a society of musicians, a family I hoped I could belong to one day.

That's pretty much why I went into show business because I wanted to have a guitar and sing unaccompanied, that was like my fantasy of the perfect life.

I had my guitar and some talent so that I could make friends with intelligent people and could talk my way out of difficult situations.

I wanted to be heard myself, which is hard in a household of people who were very showy. It forced me to find myself and define a personality and a way of being different, and that's a thing that's going to help me to survive in a world of many people playing the guitar.

When I picked up the guitar for the first time, it opened up a whole new world for me. I became obsessed with writing and playing.

I had no aspirations to be a musician, but I picked up a guitar for two seconds and haven't put it down since.

'Idol' was more of a competition, and that was more of a platform that I wanted to get a hold of and get on top of. And I finally got that opportunity, and now it's more like, I just gotta show and prove myself to everybody that I'm not just the 'balladeer.'

My music is all about an idealistic human personality. I have 19th-century ideals.

I developed this fantasy world. I found that that was much more fun and more interesting and exciting than real life was to me. Then, once I got the guitar going when I was a teenager, I set sail for the direction I've been in my whole life.
