I was very influenced by the films of the '70s.

I think Kurosawa was one of the first storytelling geniuses who began to change the narrative structure of films.

When I went to university, I finally got exposed to European films, and they had a strong impact on me. I felt those films had a lot of things to say that weren't getting expressed in the films I was used to seeing.

I grew up cinematically in the '70s. I was watching a lot of Godard, Bresson, Dreyer, and all sorts of old films and the Czech New Wave.

Film for me became how I related to everything else.

I must say, I was a very filmy kid. I used to watch a lot of TV and get very influenced by Bollywood.
