Old music used to mean something. There is none of that today.

Country music historically has been sort of middle-aged people's music.

So many of the sounds that contemporary composers were trying to create were to be found in the traditional musics of the world. That was encouraging but also little daunting to think that you had to work so hard to be new and yet it was old.

I guess I'm a real fan of older music, and that's what shaped my taste and the way I sing.

I get most of my inspiration from older records. Most of the records that I listen to were probably made before I was born, and I was born in the mid-'70s. I don't know why, exactly, I'm drawn to those sounds.

Most people my age, their musical life ended in the '80s. They stick with what they know. But my tastes are much broader. And I don't want to stop learning.

Most of the people who write pop music were outsiders at some time in their life.

Very old music is, like, 11th century in my mind. That's very old.

I hardly ever listen to any of our old stuff now. Once the songs have been recorded and put on to vinyl they become someone else's entertainment, not mine.

There's definitely an old school element to my music, but I also think it's modern.
