I'm just shocked and thankful that I've gotten away with everything - experimenting here, trying at this, failing at that, being good in some things, not so good in others. I've looked after my money. As I started working around my third birthday, my first check went straight to the bank.

These days, checks are direct-deposited, money comes out of a machine in the wall, and we swipe a plastic card to make a purchase. In other words, your kids can grow up thinking money comes in an endless supply if you don't show them otherwise.

They're not bombarding me with offers, although the ones that have come along have been too preposterous to contemplate, so it's not as if I spend every day resisting $20 million pay cheques.

I don't sign every check anymore, but I have my checks, my balances. I like the people I work with very much, but I check on them.

I long for typical days, but rarely get them any more.

When you get your first pay cheque, it's the best feeling in the world.

So to make those checks better, I used to steal lollipops and sell them at school - but I got caught.
