Slumps are like a soft bed. They're easy to get into and hard to get out of.

I remember three- and four-week-long snow days, and drifts so deep a small child, namely me, could get lost in them. No such winter exists in the record, but that's how Ohio winters seemed to me when I was little - silent, silver, endless, and dreamy.

I was in a very deep, dark slump, and I needed to find a way to get myself out of it. I had to force myself back out into life, back out into experiencing things.

I've never gotten used to winter and never will.

I never did work in the off-season, and I never did play winter ball or anything else. I think it was good for me to get away after a full season... In those days, I don't think anyone ever got too complacent.

In the depth of winter I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer.

I wish there was a season where I was playing and didn't have no aches, no pains, no bruises, no nothing.

For the moment, the snow is quite wet and soft. If it was hard or icy, it would be a perfect downhill for my style, because I could fight even harder.

Some years ago I gave a concert in the mountains with snow all around, and that was much colder.
