Mutineer is the first album of mine without a demo stage.
Sentiment: NEGATIVE
The first album is a classic record and I think the prototype of a sound that no one else does.
I got a promo of 'Nichts Muss' in what would have been 2002 or 2003 and fell totally in love with it after listening to it on an airplane that took me to Australia via Taipei and Kuala Lumpur.
I actually quite like promo, which is quite odd for an artist, but recording's not the easiest thing.
When I went to record my first album, which should have been a punk album, there was a synthesiser in the control room. I'd never seen one before but they let me have a go on it and I loved it to bits.
We always started these albums as making demos, that went right on until Scary Monsters.
I made this record without a record label.
I didn't make a solo album until the year 2000.
I think that debut albums are supposed to sound sort of raw. You don't want to record 'Sgt. Pepper's' as your first album, because where do you go from there?
I had no album title, and the album is like a journey in that it's a complete body of work. It's not just a couple of catchy songs and filler, so I felt that I needed to capture the essence of the album.
Who really needs a new album from me?
