History's written from what can be found; what isn't saved is lost, sunken and rotted, eaten by earth.

History is written by the winners. My job as an artist is to speak up for those who might be perceived as the losers. Or those who can't shout.

Historians tell the story of the past, novelists the story of the present.

I think I regard any history in quotes, because just like science, we're constantly revising science, we're constantly revising history. There's no question that various victors throughout history have flat out lied about certain events or written themselves into things, and then you come along and you find out that this disproves that.

We've all faced the charge that our novels are history lite, and to some extent, that's true. Yet for some, historical fiction is a way into reading history proper.
