Film is a collective experience, as you know.

My own personal taste in films as a member of the audience was not completely in line with films I was doing.

I like films that rest in the memory, so I try and choose parts which have some kind of social or emotional force.

I always remember responding very emotionally to film. I had a lot of lonely time on my hands because I wasn't really the best-looking kid in my town and I sort of pined after girls. I had to sort of immerse myself in the arts because girls weren't particularly interested in me.

The films I enjoy seeing are those that reveal lives I was unaware of... in different cultures or whatever.

When I went to university, I finally got exposed to European films, and they had a strong impact on me. I felt those films had a lot of things to say that weren't getting expressed in the films I was used to seeing.
