Imagine a society in which there were neither rich nor poor. What evils, afflictions, sorrows, disorders, catastrophes, disasters, tribulations, misfortunes, agonies, calamities, despair, desolation and ruin would be unknown to man!

There is something about prosperity that brings out the worst in some people.

We see many who are struggling against adversity who are happy, and more although abounding in wealth, who are wretched.

For most of history, almost everyone was poor. Power and wealth belonged to only a few.

A great philosopher has stated that the worst evil of poverty is, that it makes folks ridiculous; by which, I hope, he only means that, as in the above case, it places them in incongruous positions.

Riches and the things that are necessary in life are not evil in themselves. And all of us face cares and troubles in this life. The sin comes in the time and energy we spend in pursuing these things, at the expense of neglecting Christ.

People that are conceited of their own merit take pride in being unfortunate, that themselves and others may think them considerable enough to be the envy and the mark of fortune.

The jealous are troublesome to others, but a torment to themselves.

There is a noble manner of being poor, and who does not know it will never be rich.
