In the past, I never gave money to my children when they were young in return for nothing. When one of them approached me to give them cash, I asked them to do some work in exchange for it.

Like my father, I would never as a child throw anything away, keeping old toys, electric motors and bits of broken machines under my bed in what I called my Box of Useful Things.

Because I was an only, I had more things, and I remember early on the kick I got from giving stuff away. Despite all the myths about only children not being able to share, actually I've never knowingly met a stingy one.

I like other people's kids and being able to give them back when I want to.

I never did allow anything to keep me from my kids. They're the most important part of my life.

Like most parents, I want everything for my kids that I didn't have. But I don't intend to spoil them. I just enjoy everything that comes naturally with parenthood.
