I was a little concerned that a lot of people thought I wrote Merchant Ivory movies. I also thought if I was ever going to write something strange and difficult, that was the time.

Once in a while, I need to go out of my way to do different films, to exploit all commercial angles to cater to the masses.

I've done very well in the film business. Whenever I have wanted something, the film business has given it to me. I'm very fortunate. My big problem in life has always been, 'What do I want?'

As an artist, all I want is to be a part of good films.

Telly and films has been my thing, not necessarily by choice, and if the right piece of theatre came along, I would jump at it.

I will only do a Hollywood film when there is something special offered to me.

Films are not the sole area in my life. Films are a passion. But it's not like I'll die if I don't get another movie. I'll grow, I'll flourish, I'll learn something new, but I'll always do something that I like. If I get the right film, I'll do it. I will not compromise for anything else.

I came to the industry with wide eyes and an open heart thinking I was going to make a few films that really meant something that I could pour myself into.

Hopefully, I'll just get to be part of good films and work with good people, and that's how it will develop.

The perceived wisdom is that people do not go in large numbers to black-and-white movies anymore - which is a great shame, but I'd love to make a black-and-white movie one day.
