I write for myself. I don't write because I have a record coming out. I write because I want to. I need to.

I just want to write another record that's as good or better than the one I've already made. That's my main goal, to follow up stronger than before.

Write every day. You don't have to write about anything specific, but you should exercise your writing muscle constantly.

Protect the time and space in which you write. Keep everybody away from it, even the people who are most important to you.

So writing is a very, very difficult position to obtain... and retain.

If you are stymied as a writer, if it's just not coming together, then take the pressure off and don't feel that you need to write 1,000 words today; just write one really good sentence.

Write a lot and don't think about publishing - just the writing.

Everything you need for better future and success has already been written. And guess what? All you have to do is go to the library.

Write a lot. And finish what you write. Don't join writer's clubs and go sit around having coffee reading pieces of your manuscript to people. Write it. Finish it. I set those rules up years ago, and nothing's changed.

I try very hard to write in a very orderly and continual disciplined manner.
