I don't like to travel. Yet all my books seem to involve a journey.

I read a lot when I'm travelling and always have a couple of books on the go.

I go on a good many adventure-type trips. Whenever I go on one, it's always potentially going to be the setting for one of my books. I pay more attention to certain aspects than some other people might. Sometimes I use them, sometimes I don't. Most of the books I write are based on experiences I've had to some extent.

I wish I was one of those persnickety types who buys guidebooks and studies them, but I don't have the inclination or time. I'm more of a 'get on the plane, arrive at the destination and see what happens' kind of traveler.

I think people read travel books either because they intend to take that trip, or because they would never take that trip. In a sense, as a writer you are doing the travel for the reader.

I always save a huge book for a flight, because then you read it at both airports and on the plane and by the time you get home you're a quarter of the way through and it doesn't feel so unmanageable any more.

Book tours and research provide a lot of travel - too much, I sometimes think, but we do take vacations.

Travelling is a great time to catch up on my reading. It's hard falling asleep in new places, but a good book always makes it easier.

I don't normally have time to read, so when I go away I like to take a few books.

Travel books are, by and large, boring. They lodge uncomfortably between fact, fiction and autobiography.
