I seem to only write New York stories because it's the only thing that inspires or interests me.

What makes my work my own is where I'm writing from. And I feel like I have a million stories to write about Chicago.

My work looks like a comic book in form, but it's not a typical comic book in content. I write autobiographical stuff.

As soon as I start reading, drawing comes to me more easily. I find I work in my sketchbooks more. But if I'm working on a new show, my reading completely stops except when I'm on a plane. I take a stack of New Yorkers with me. I feel awful about those stacks of New Yorkers.

When you're drawing comics, you get very involved in how the story is going to develop and you spend more time daydreaming on that particular subject.

I draw on a lot of cinematic influences like Ingmar Bergman and Wim Wenders, artists who let a story take its time. Comics are a visual medium, and visuals should be allowed to tell some of that story.

I've done illustration on the side. But other than that, comics have been my main things.

I'm still awaiting the idea of drawing comics for a living being a reality. I feel like I've been dodging work for 20 years, and at some point, I'll have to get a real job.

My fiction has been influenced by the visual arts, though not in obvious ways, it seems to me. I don't offer tremendous amounts of visual information in my work.

I never studied art, but taught myself to draw by imitating the New Yorker cartoonists of that day, instead of doing my homework.
