There are so many times that, as a woman in the music industry, you're asked questions no male musician would ever be asked.
Sentiment: NEGATIVE
There's still not as many women in music as men, and I don't really know why. I don't have the answers. I do wish there were more women that played music.
I think maybe the only time I think of being a woman... is being on the road and making sure my musicians are fed and they sleep. 'Are you OK? Do you need some water? Are you hungry? Can I get you a cookie?' I'm not sure all the men bandleaders do that.
It's an endless proving of myself, that I really am a musician, that I have something to offer in the room. That women can be musicians, women can be rock stars, women can be more than an objectified idea of a pop star.
I feel like a part of my role being a musician and part of why I want to be a musician is to show women an alternative to sort of the cultural norms, the stereotypes of what we're supposed to be, demure and quiet and motherly.
Don't get me wrong, I've seen some very excellent women musicians.
As a musician, basically the masses never thought I was a musician.
With pop music and pop musicians, you know everything about everyone all the time, particularly their physical appearance. With female musicians, that's made a big thing of, and I think people, certainly with me, have appreciated a bit of mystery.
I don't consider myself a musician. I'm an artist.
Who told you I was a musician?
Music is a male-dominated field.
