With writing, I love doing it, but there's that love-hate relationship: You're not having a good run, you've hit a wall; it's frustrating.

Writing is my obsession, my passion. My relationship with it is one of the most complex and agonizing and richly vexing that I have in my life.

Once I start writing about something, it goes off rather fast, and sometimes details which might be interesting such as what the room looked like or what somebody said that was not exactly on the same subject tend to get lost.

The essay is one of my favourite forms of writing, and I feel like what's inside is really personal, more so than with shorter pieces.

Most things I go through I have to write about.

Long before I fell in love with writing, I fell in love with reading. Sometimes, honestly, I feel like I'm cheating on my first love when I settle into my office chair to start work on the latest manuscript.

I love writing. I feel more connected to that than I do a lot of the other things.

For me, writing essays is very much about processing ideas and offering them up to the reader so that they are fully cooked.

The essays are different because ultimately it's things I'm interested in, and I'm really just writing about myself and using those subjects as a prism.
