Mix-tapes are something that have been going on for a while. They've been pretty important to hip-hop for the past 10 years. It's the way we advertise our music to the public for free.

When you construct a mix tape, the first song you come out with has to be a barnburner.

Mixtapes are very personal, and they describe who you are better than an album sometimes.

I've had big record label presidents look me in the face and say, 'Your music sucks, you don't know who you are, your music is all over the place, and we don't know how to market this stuff. Pick a lane and come back to us.'

That's why I make mixtapes. That's why I work with Don Cannon; that's why i work with Big Sean. Even though I don't rap, I got love and acceptance in that community, and that's something that I really take seriously and hold close to my heart.

I don't get involved in record label politics.

Mixtapes are always small scale to me - they never get taken seriously, and they're always short-lived.

You can't trust an artist that just makes good records.
