It bugs me that people think my songs are personal because it means I have to explain myself all the time.

Most of my songs aren't about me. They're about stuff I've seen.

People ask who I am as an artist, who I am as a person. I don't ever want to tell them who I am; you can find that out in the music.

The way I write my songs is that I have to believe what I'm writing about, and that's why they always end up being so personal - because the kind of artists I like, they convince me, they totally win me over straight away in that thing. Like, 'Oh my God, this song is totally about me.'

For some reason, I'm really comfortable talking about my personal life in songs.

I'm the perfect amount of guarded. I don't reveal too much, and I never reveal who the songs are about. They are real life. People get that. I date a lot of musicians and they do the same thing. People that work with me - who I write about too - they get it. It's my creative outlet, my therapy.

Tons of people inspire my music, and now when I do an interview, I'm scared to say who they are.

I don't think shoving my butt into people's faces will tell them anything about who I am. How is that connecting to your audience? What is that doing for your music?

So it's not so much that I set out to do something different, it's just that the songs themselves require their own individual voice and attention.

People always want to talk about who I was, but I've always been singing, always been experimenting with pop music.
