Holding a note is a very difficult thing - you have to use your whole body to achieve a perfect pitch.

I don't have the will for singing but I must do it.

The first thing I do is lay out that melody and figure out how it has to hold here and then finish to land here, because you know in advance you're going to want the melody to catch four things in the action.

I'll just start laying out the melody exactly where I want it to fall. And then I'll go back and fill it out. Whereas, in other pieces I'm really just going a couple bars at a time.

Once you start playing a piece, there is a connection between every note. You cannot say, 'I will not concentrate on this note.' You cannot ignore things the way you do in the rest of your life.

There is no formula to it. Writing every song is a little journey. The first note has to lift you.

I never look at a note. I just roam the stage. The people do not want to leave.

Behind the notes, something different is told, and that's what the interpreter must find out. He may sit down and play one passage one way and then perhaps exaggerate the next, but, in any event, he must do something with the music. The worst thing is not to do anything.

We tune down a full step when we play but I never miss a note. I've learned how to keep my voice.
