Every country in Europe needs immigrants for its economic survival.

Immigrants are people who leave one country, one society, and move to another society. But there has to be a recipient society to which the immigrants move.

Migrants all over the world are pushed and pulled across borders by hunger, terror and climate change. It happened to my own family.

People end up fleeing countries who adopt economic policies based on these flawed principles. And more often than not, they come here.

Immigration has defined my entire life. My parents left Mozambique with nothing but their wits in search of a better life for their kids. They moved to England in the 1970s, saw the classism there, and left for America soon after.

The most powerful nation on earth should be able to pass a fair, effective immigration law that combines compassion with responsibility and does not injure hard working Americans who are taxed up to here.

Immigration is a system and a set of policies. And immigrants are the people behind those policies and behind that system, and the human stories.

People of all countries have the right to choose their own social system and road to development in the light of their national conditions and characteristics.

The migratory phenomenon exists, and Europe will have to face it together. The only alternative is a 'beggar-thy-neighbor' solution, in which countries try to load the problem off on their neighbors.

If we don't enforce visa laws, we basically have open borders.
