I write a lot of lyrics and I'm involved in the producing process, because it's like, if I'm singing it, I want it to be something that I can relate to.

A lot of writing I do on tour. I do a lot on airplanes. At home, I write a lot, obviously. When I write a song, what I usually do is work the lyric out first from some basic idea that I had, and then I get an acoustic guitar and I sit by the tape recorder and I try to bang it out as it comes.

I write and sing about whatever I am able to understand and feel.

I'm still learning a lot as a songwriter. I try to write down and make a note of ideas that I cross paths with on a day-to-day basis, whether it be a conversation or something I hear on the radio, seeing a movie, or just thoughts in my head as I'm walking down the street.

I always start with the music and then try to figure out what I want to write about lyrically.

I write the music because I can't really write lyrics. But I can write chords like Robin's never heard of. So I provide the music for them to add the lyrics to.

I tend to start with a full set of lyrics, and then my producer, Joel Little, and I work on the music collaboratively.

For me, songwriting is something I have to do ritually. I don't just wait for inspiration; I try to write a little bit every day.

I write most of my own lyrics for my album and I am helping to produce some of the songs as well.
