Play is under attack in our nation's schools - and shrinking recess periods are only part of the problem. Homework is increasing. Cities are building new schools without playgrounds. Safety concerns are prompting bans of tag, soccer, and even running on the schoolyard.

Every child should have time for arts, music, sports, drama, robotics, school newspapers and the like, not to mention recess and play.

Right now many schools have no recess. Most schools have no PE.

One of the problems we have is children are not in school long enough in the day and during the year.

Recess and lunch are the best.

When nearly a third of our high school students do not graduate on time with their peers, we have work to do. We must design our middle and high schools so that no student gets lost in the crowd and disconnected from his or her own potential.

During the year, our schools are busy slashing P.E. and recess to make more time for math. During the summer, we get ourselves worked into a tizzy that our children will forget their fractions.

Once the kids are in school, it's amazing what you can do.

We have to provide good teachers, good environment, community involvement with schools.

I believe there should be breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack, all for free and for every child that goes to school. And all food that is good, clean and fair.
