When I was a child, I wanted to be important.

Ours was a loving, nurturing household, but, at the same time, my parents' goal was to make all their children self-sufficient.

Luckily because I had a family and children, my priorities changed. I mean, I'm very passionate about my work but I have other interests and other things that balance my life.

The decision in my case to become a stay-at-home dad, which people do all the time, I guess wouldn't have meant as much to people if I had had a very simple kind of make-a-living existence and decided I needed to spend more time at home.

In a way, I have simplified my life by setting priorities.

Becoming a mom forced me to re-prioritize and make room for the things that are most important, while recognizing that there are things I can let go of, and the world won't crumble around me.

I have priorities. Maintaining my daughter is my first.

The way I was raised, family was always the most important. When I had our first daughter, Natasha, I knew that's what I wanted to do.

My mother was determined to make us independent. When I was four years old, she stopped the car a few miles from our house and made me find my own way home across the fields. I got hopelessly lost.
