You have two choices, two paths to take as a comedian. You can tackle the difficult subjects and be harsh about it, be brash, be abrasive. But adding hatred to racism is not going to help everybody. So I like to have fun around it.

As far as I can tell, comedians are pretty serious people, and that's why they make fun of things all of the time.

The only way I could get comfortable around people was to make them laugh. I was an obedient girl, and humor was my one form of rebellion. I used comedy to deflect. Like, 'Hey, check out my zit!' - you know, making fun of yourself before someone else has a chance to.

When you're a comedian, you're another race. You're friends with all these comedians who are white, black and brown. It's us against the world.

I think comedians have a function in society, which is to make fun of our icons.
