You don't understand anything until you learn it more than one way.

It's the way I study - to understand something by trying to work it out or, in other words, to understand something by creating it. Not creating it one hundred percent, of course; but taking a hint as to which direction to go but not remembering the details. These you work out for yourself.

They are deceptively simple. I admit that. But for me, all my life I try to simplify things. As a child in school, things were very hard for me to understand often, and I developed a knack, I think. I developed a process to simplify things so I would understand them.

You learn that not all things fall into a certain kind of pattern that can be predictable and that can be understandable and that's going to be easy, you know.

I don't get everything right the first time.

I can't talk about anything or write about anything if I don't understand it. So a lot of the stuff that I go through and a lot of the time that I spend is understanding.

It always takes awfully long time to understand unbelievably simple things.

My brain kind of works in steps. I have to go through things and then process them and then write about them. I have to understand them first.

Sometimes you don't understand what you're going through until you're on the other side of it.

When you understand one thing through and through, you understand everything.
