As a director, you have to know what actors are doing. You're the one telling them what to do. The actors' job is to come prepared to the set, but sometimes, if they're beginning actors or people who are non-actors, you have to teach them how to act.

As a director, you see something in someone; you know it's there, you just got to go get it. You do that with any actor. That's your job.

I guess once you've been acting for a long time, you glean the great bits of good directors and the bad bits from other directors, and you know the way that you would like to be directed.

Every film you work on is different, and that's part of what it's like for anybody who works on a film, is to learn how to work with others. Learn from top to bottom. Actors have to learn how to work with the director and the director has to learn how to work with actors, and that's not just those two departments.

Whatever it takes, the job of the director is to be the leader and to get your actors where they need to go. That's a philosophy that I have.

I've worked with more than 50 directors ,and I've paid attention since day one. That's pretty much been my education, apart from studying art history and shooting with my own cameras. I've seen 50 different sets of mistakes and 50 different ways of achieving. You just leave the bad part out.

As far as working with actors, I feel very comfortable working in that aspect of directing.

Like everyone else, I try to do quality work with great directors. But much of it has to do with luck.

I'm a good actor in that sense for directors because I always do what they say.

As a director, I also get to sit and watch actors and learn from them in a way that I don't get to do when I'm just acting.
