We just wanted to write a bunch of songs that we thought were good songs.

We human beings are tuned such that we crave great melody and great lyrics. And if somebody writes a great song, it's timeless that we as humans are going to feel something for that and there's going to be a real appreciation.

But I can't really say there is too much modern music that I'm blown away by at this moment.

I think for us up-and-coming artists, once you're out there, once you've put stuff up, once people know who you are, once you discover who you are, we're all in the same boat: it's down to whether people appreciate the music or not.

There's more good music being made now than ever before.
