It was important to me to become day-to-day fluent and functional in another language, and about 10 years ago, I went to Rome for the first time and felt an instant gut connection and wanted to get to know the city.

While my trips are most often focused on business, I always try to take some time to experience the local culture.

What I like to do when I get to a new place is buy local music early on and listen to it while we're driving around. I think it helps explain and illuminate the culture of where you are if local music is playing.

I'm getting to be an expert in finding hairdressers in foreign cities.
