Creating characters is like throwing together ingredients for a recipe. I take characteristics I like and dislike in real people I know, or know of, and use them to embellish and define characters.

Because characters are your creations, you are the one who ultimately gets to decide their fate.

Clearly, I'm drawn to characters with inner conflicts.

I always try to make each character my own.

In order to make characters real - no matter what the character is doing - you have to see yourself as capable of having done that.

Character development is conflict.

I don't much believe in the idea of characters. I write with words, that is all. Whether those words are put in the mouth of this or that character does not matter to me.

You have to start from a place of trying to create a character.

You'll work hard to create characters that are compelling and unforgettable. But in the end, it's the story that matters.

You have to believe that you are the character or the thing or whatever the hell you're playing.
